This is an original and illuminating interpretation of events in a region that is still deeply affected by the transformations that Michael Provence illustrates so perceptively.By denying that, the author perpetuates the picture of the Arabs as victims of a hostile world, a picture they love to paint of themselves, but one which is still not entirely true. The organization of the book follows the same trend, as the second half strikes the reader as rather nation-centric, with each section corresponding to Palestine, Syria, Iraq, Lebanon, and Transjordan. This is a kaleidoscopic, or perhaps better panoramic, book about the Middle East of the past three decades. I hoped The Last Ottoman Generation would be useful to scholars of the region and the general public, especially in the Middle East, for whom the last century often seems like a kind of black box of mystery and misery.
