It was around the time when my second pair of Salomon mid length boots fell apart after about a year of use that I decided that my next pair of boots would not do that. The wide sole version of the PILGRIM GTX Combat FG M is a true multi-purpose highly breathable boot with outstanding support, stability and impact absorption. The official MOD version of the renowned AKU Pilgrim with improved breathability and drying thanks to the new Gore-Tex Performance Lining with a perforated EVA interlining. The MTP colour was a nice looking combo of dark brown and sandy tan, but the solid MoD brown goes really well with the Finnish forest floor, as well as it fits great with a pair of jeans too! The Gore-Tex lining ensures waterproofness, keeping your feet dry and comfortable even in the most challenging conditions.The heavier duty Vibram outsole features deeper lugs for improved grip on a variety of terrain and has a built-in rocker to produce a stable and progressive walking platform.

I do have a narrow foot so it was gratifying to see that the standard width fitting was able to accommodate me comfortably. The Nitrile sole also provides improved resistance to high temperatures whilst still providing grip and stability across a wide variety of terrain.

So much in fact that when the time comes to give up my current pair (which is not going to come any time soon, no matter how many kilometres I walk in these, these will last a long while.

I found when I tightened the laces to accommodate my instep that the sides of lace gate became almost touching. Thanks to these features, the Pilgrim GTX Combat by AKU performs well in stability for demanding and dynamic conditions. As far as NFCI issues go, leather boots wet out too and present the same or worse risk as they take longer to dry – where I now work it’s not uncommon to be stood at the top of a Lakeland pass in feet of snow, stopping traffic from passing, or in town dealing with flooding – never had a problem. The fabric is highly breathable and the gluing method used whith the lining is said to enhance breathability and the structural integrity of the membrane. The weight does mean that they are not a breeze to run in, the ankle enclosing structure affects that a bit too.With a 3D fully taped Gore-Tex booty lining and Air 8000 uppers the Pilgrim GTX is 30% more breathable than conventional Gore-Tex lined boots. This midsole is not only flexible and soft but it moulds to the natural imprint of your foot ensuring an even distribution of pressure that ensures stability and less stress on the foot. AKU run every membrane “bootie” through a pressure test to ensure it is waterproof before it goes into the boot.
